Solution

Websites can go offline in two ways: They can be “suspended” and they can be “deactivated”. When you are using the Wordpress toolkit, an additional maintenance page is available through the toolkit.

A „suspended“ website delivers the web server error code 503. The 503 suspension keeps all search engine entries intact. Search engines will recognize that this is a temporary suspension. When you “deactivate” the website, the web server will deliver the host’s default web page instead. Search engines will realize that the website is deactivated and will decrease its rank or remove the website completely from search engine results. The host’s default page is a redirect to the Bitpalace website.

If you want to take a website offline temporarily, because you don’t want anyone to surf on it during maintenance work, choose “suspend”.

If you want to take a website offline for good, choose “deactivate”.

In both cases you can continue to access and edit website directories, files and databases.

You can choose the operating mode “suspend” and “deactivate” in the web space control panel on the “Websites & Domains” tab of the domain. The “suspend” and “deactivate” links can be found under the domain’s headline.

In case you are operating a Wordpress website and have installed Wordpress by the App tab from the app archive of the web space control panel, an additional suspension typ is available by the Wordpress toolkit. Simply click on the website name of your Wordpress site next to the Wordpress icon on the “Websites & Domains” tab to access the Wordpress toolkit page. On the Wordpress toolkit page you will find a “maintenance mode” link where you can turn maintenance on and off. For the maintenance mode you can select a background image, you can enter a message and you can create a countdown.
